Dov Lederberg

Short Biography

Dov Lederberg grew up
in the Philadelphia area (Central HS 211)
and began his involvement in the arts
at Haverford College,
concentrating on the experimental film
and became an active film-maker
within The New American Underground.
In the late Sixties Dov studied
in yeshivas in NYC and Israel.
Between 1970 and 1994
he worked as an independent film director,
mainly for Israel Television,
making documentary and educational films.
Since 1983 Dov has been deeply involved
in using new art mediums and techniques to
express the subtle ideas of Jewish mystical teachings
and meditation and has created
many original acrylic paintings
and video art compositions
inspired by the Hebrew letters in the scribal style.
His current work is involved with kabbalah mandalas
and visual paradigms for dialogue ,
triptychs ,wax congealings, acrylic emulsions
and paintings on refective surfaces
within the abstract illusionist genre,
creating an evocative "gestalt' which invites
the viewer's active interaction and interpretation.
His paintings and video art are exhibited
in museums and galleries in the US and Israel.
After the passing away of his wife,
the artist, Yael Avi-Yonah
Dov now lives with his new wife, Dorit
in Tzfat (Safed),
but makes frequent trips abroad
for exhibitions and lectures.

Artist's Manifesto

I am engaged in the
converging vectors of art and science,
but receive added inspiration from
kabbalah teachings & meditation
and try to create visual forms
(in paintings on canvas but also video art)
conducive to mystical experience
and self-transformation.

Various curators have termed my work
as abstract illusionist
or mystical abstract expressionist.
I like to regard myself as an "emerging" artist
creating art
with many layers and meanings that
"emerge" before the viewer, an evocative gestalt
that invites the viewer's interaction and discovery.
This effect is enhanced by viewing the work
with avatar-type 3-D glasses
(which of course is difficult to achieve
in this web context)
or turning the painting on its different sides.
